Shifa, a native of Lingasugur, had been studying for her MSc at the Government Degree College in Sindhanur. On the fateful morning, she had arrived in Sindhanur for college when she was approached by Mubin, a young man from Lingasugur. Mubin had been reportedly in love with Shifa and had been persistently pursuing her for marriage. However, Shifa made it clear that she was not interested and wanted to focus on her education, saying, "I will not marry you, I still have to study."

Unable to accept the rejection, Mubin resorted to violence. In a fit of rage, he attacked Shifa on a deserted road, slitting her throat with a knife in broad daylight. The horrific scene shocked passersby and led to an immediate police investigation.
