The Excise Department has stepped up its vigilance to prevent illegal liquor smuggling ahead of the upcoming elections in Kerala. As part of the intensified enforcement measures, officials conducted a surprise inspection on a long-distance train and seized a consignment of liquor suspected to be transported illegally. The action is part of a broader strategy to monitor transport routes and curb violations during the sensitive election period.
Officials carried out a surprise raid on the Mangala Lakshadweep Express, which was travelling from Madgaon in Goa to Kerala via Karwar. With heightened alertness along interstate borders and railway routes, a team of Excise officers boarded the train on April 1 and conducted a detailed inspection from Madgaon to Kumta, checking multiple coaches.
During the inspection of the general compartments, the team noticed an unattended and suspicious bag. Upon opening it, they discovered 24 cans of Kingfisher Premium beer, each of 500 ml, concealed inside the bag.
Vigilance has been beefed up along the borders of neighbouring states and on train routes due to the elections. On April 1, a team of Excise officials travelled on the train from Madgaon to Kumta, conducting a thorough check of all the coaches.
No passenger came forward to claim ownership of the bag. As the person responsible could not be identified, the Excise officials seized the liquor and registered a case. Further investigation is underway to trace those involved in the illegal transport.
The operation was led by the Excise Deputy Superintendent of the Karwar sub-division. The team included Excise Inspectors from the Ankola and Karwar circles, along with other district staff, ensuring a coordinated effort during the raid.
Officials have stated that such inspections will continue in the coming days to prevent illegal liquor transport during the Kerala election period. Railway routes and border areas are being closely monitored, and strict action will be taken against any suspicious activity.
