A foreign traveller’s candid take on India has gone viral on social media, challenging the often negative portrayal of the country online. Digital creator Jack Heaton, who is currently exploring different parts of India, shared a video reflecting on his experiences and highlighting the warmth, hospitality, and diversity he has encountered. His observations have sparked conversations online, with many appreciating his balanced perspective on the realities of life in India.
In the video posted on Instagram, titled “I need to make a confession about India”, Heaton spoke about the gap between online narratives and his real-life experiences. He acknowledged that issues such as traffic, cleanliness, and crowding do exist in certain areas, but emphasised that they represent only a small part of the larger picture. According to him, much of India’s beauty and positive aspects remain underrepresented on social media platforms.
Heaton cited his visit to Lalbagh Botanical Garden in Bengaluru as an example of India’s overlooked charm. Describing the location as peaceful, scenic, and well maintained, he pointed out that such spaces rarely feature in viral content. He also noted that, in his experience, many streets are not as unclean as often portrayed, with visible efforts being made by people to maintain cleanliness.
The traveller also criticised the tendency of some foreign vloggers to focus only on extreme or negative aspects of India, such as unhygienic food stalls or poorly maintained areas. He explained that India offers a wide range of choices, from budget friendly options to high end experiences, and that visitors can shape their experiences based on their preferences. He further added that locals have generally been friendly and welcoming, especially when approached with respect.
Heaton expressed concern that online content often highlights only one side of India, creating a distorted global image. He said he intends to present a more balanced view by showcasing both the challenges and the beauty of the country. His aim, he added, is not to ignore existing issues but to ensure that the positive aspects are equally represented.
As the video gained traction, social media users shared mixed reactions. Some pointed out that negative content tends to attract more views and engagement online, which may explain why such portrayals dominate digital platforms. Others supported Heaton’s effort to present a more nuanced perspective of India.
One user commented: “South India generally doesn’t live up to the stereotypes of India. It’s cleaner, the air is not as polluted, more greenery and civic minded people.”
Second user commented: “Because those videos are also true about india. Large part of urban india is dirty, poor and poorly maintained. What those vloggers do is, they don't explain why india is like the way they show, rather they simply blame it on Indians.”
