West Bengal: Thakurpukur residents pay homage to goddess Durga in PPE suits

Bijoya Dashami marks the day when one bids adieu to Goddess Durga at the end of a five-day stay on Earth. Legend has it that Dashami is the day when she sets out for Kailash, her husband’s abode, accompanied by her children. With a heavy heart, Bengali Hindus immerse the clay idol of the goddess.

A very integral part of Durga puja is ‘Dhunuchi Naach’. Durga Puja evenings are incomplete if men and women, boys and girls don’t take the floor to dance to the rhythmic beats of dhaak and bells, holding earthen pots billowing a fragrant smoke.

This year, Durga Puja was celebrated in a different way due to the pandemic situation. Bengalis had to sit in their home and watch the beautifully decorated Durga puja pandals virtually. On the morning of Bijoya Dashami, women of Thakurpukur puja committee wore PPE kit and performed ‘Dhunuchi Naach’ in front of Durga Ma. It is a new experience for the residents of Thakurpukur. 

Performing ‘Dhunuchi Naach’ by wearing PPE kit is a new innovative taken by the residents of Thakurpukur. All of them are hoping that next year the situation becomes normal and people can again celebrate Durga puja without any restrictions. They prayed to Goddess Durga to kill the COVID demon.

Even as the coronavirus spread slows down in most parts of West Bengal, Kolkata and North 24 Parganas is witnessing a pick-up in cases during Durga puja. However, the number of infected people in these two cities was around 600 in the month of September, the number has reached nearly 900 in the month of October. 

According to the State Health Bulletin on Sunday (October 25), 910 people were infected with COVID in a single day in Kolkata. 915 people were infected in North 24 Parganas in one day. Once again, Kolkata tops the list of COVID-19 cases.
