Calcutta HC gives partial relief to Durga puja committees in West Bengal
The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday (October 21) offered Durga Puja organisers some leeway by partially relaxing its earlier order on the number of committee members who will have access to the pandal. The Division Bench of Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Arijit Banerjee also allowed entry of more Puja organisers from 25 to 60 for big Puja committees. For small Puja committees, the number of organisers allowed to enter the marquees or the pandals at a time will, however, remain the same (15).

Heavy rain alert during Durga puja in West Bengal
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said maximum intensity rain will be recorded in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal and the northeast on October 22 and 23. With a low-pressure formation over the central parts of the Bay of Bengal, Kolkata and the adjoining areas of south Bengal are likely to receive light to receive heavy showers over the next 48 hours. It will be a wet Durga Puja for West Bengal as the Meteorological office has predicted the heaviest rainfall on October 23, which is likely to continue till the forenoon of October 24.

Doctors visit puja pandals in Kolkata to check safety compliance
Doctors from the Protect the Warriors (PTW) visited 88 puja pandals in Kolkata to check the status of COVID safety compliance. The doctors had divided themselves into five teams on Tuesday (October 20). The other three teams were led by doctors Swarnapali Maity, Soumik Goswami and Somnath Bhar. The doctors, though, said while many pujas were trying to restrict crowd, steps at some pujas were not impressive.

Dhakis are traditional drummers who play the drum known as ‘dhak’ during Hindu festivals, particularly during the Durga Puja festivities in Bengal. The dhakis used to play the ‘dhak’ in front of Sealdah station every year before puja. But this year, most of the dhakis could not come to Kolkata because the train services is not resumed. On the other hand, the puja committees in Kolkata have decided not to play ‘dhak’ this year due to the low budget. Therefore, the dhakis have incurred heavy losses.

A bamboo fence has been erected at a certain distance in front of each pandal. The organizers said they would follow the High Court’ order.

Overnight Durga Puja pandal-hopping to start today in West Bengal
Overnight Durga Puja pandal-hopping is expected to start from today (October 19). In a meeting with the puja committees on September 24, chief minister Mamata Banerjee said that people can visit puja pandals in the evening from Tritiya to Ekadashi. While Tritiya falls today (October 19), Ekadashi will be observed on October 27.
