A first-year student at a private university in Punjab's Phagwara committed suicide, sparking a campus protest, police said on Wednesday.
The student, who was from Kerala and was enrolled in Lovely Professional University's (LPU) B.Design programme, reportedly took drastic action on Tuesday.
Following that, other university students staged a protest on campus. Outside the university campus, police officers have been stationed.
According to a police official in Phagwara, the student appeared to be dealing with personal issues, as evidenced by a suicide note he left behind. The student's parents have been notified, and an investigation is underway.
A district administration official in Kapurthala urged students not to believe rumours.
The unfortunate incident has saddened LPU. "The initial police investigation and the content of the suicide note point to personal issues of the deceased." The university is fully cooperating with the authorities in its investigation.
"The University mourns the student's death and extends its condolences to the bereaved family," LPU said in a statement on its Twitter account.
