Karnataka rains: 247 villages flooded, 43,000 people evacuated, says BS Yediyurappa

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Wednesday has said that around 43,000 people were evacuated after 247 villages in north Karnataka were inundated due to heavy rains and floods that took place last week.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Wednesday said around 43,000 people were evacuated after 247 villages in north Karnataka were inundated due to heavy rains and floods that took place last week.

After conducting an aerial survey and meeting top district administration officials of the affected areas, BS Yediyurappa said "About 43,000 people have been evacuated from affected districts. At least 247 villages on the banks of Bhima and Krishna rivers were inundated due to the conditions".

The CM also stated that the extent of crop loss would be assessed only on completion of a joint survey done by the officials of agriculture, horticulture, and revenue departments.

However, the CM did not make any announcement citing the model code of conduct in place due to the Legislative Council and Assembly bypolls in force.

The CM added that officials are being asked to ensure adequate supply of drinking water, food, and medicine to people residing in relief centres across Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur, and Bidar districts.

Meanwhile, it was reported that Yediyurappa has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting to release an emergency relief fund package of Rs 10,000 crores.

The letter was written to the Prime Minister a day after he assured to help the state and release funds immediately.
