Rain threat looms over Durga Pujo pandals, West Bengal governor issues high alert

Synopsis

Widespread and heavy rainfall is likely to impact the ongoing Durga Puja celebrations in West Bengal. Heavy rainfall forecasted during the five days of Durga puja. Keeping this in view, the district governor sent a warning to the puja committees of South 24 Parganas. The possibility of heavy rainfall due to low pressure, can be accompanied by strong winds. The pandals may be damaged due to the heavy rain.

Widespread and heavy rainfall is likely to impact the ongoing Durga Puja celebrations in West Bengal.

Heavy rain is forecast in the city between Friday and Saturday (Saptami and Ashtami), which is likely to keep many people home.

A well-marked low-pressure area has formed over the west-central Bay of Bengal on Wednesday. It is likely to move north-westwards on Thursday. It will move north-eastwards towards West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts across north-west Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast during the next 48 hours.

Due to the COVID pandemic, there will be several restrictions in Durga puja this year. People will not be allowed to do pandal hopping. On top of that, heavy rain forecast during the puja days has spoiled the mood of people in West Bengal.

Heavy rainfall forecasted during the five days of Durga puja. Keeping this in view, the district governor sent a warning to the puja committees of South 24 Parganas. The possibility of heavy rainfall due to low pressure can be accompanied by strong winds. The pandals may be damaged due to the heavy rain. Therefore, it is instructed to pay close attention to the situation in advance.

From the morning of the first day of puja, the clouds of the sky are heavy. Scattered rains have started in different districts of Bengal. Various puja committees have been warned in advance. Wind speeds can range from 50 to 60 kilometers per hour. Kolkata, including two 24 Parganas, Howrah and Hooghly, will be flooded by the rains.
