Karnataka may bring back 14-day home quarantine norm as cases spike

Synopsis

Bengaluru: Increasing coronavirus cases in Karnataka is making the state department of health and family welfare contemplate bringing back its 14-day home quarantine rule in Bengaluru.

As per sources, the proposal is being considered as Bengaluru alone has 64,570 active cases and its daily new cases are high compared to other districts.

On September 12, Bengaluru reported 3,498 cases. Since April, the city has reported 3,363 deaths.

At present, only a 7-day home quarantine rule exists for people returning from overseas.

Meanwhile, Karnataka breached 10,000 COVID-19 fatality mark on Monday.

The increase in COVID-19 cases and deaths has also had a cascading effect on the administration.

Upset over the Covid-19 mismanagement, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa shunted health minister B Sreeramulu to the Social Welfare Department and appointed turncoat MLA Dr K Sudhakar in his place.

Many in political circles say that out of the 17 MLAs from JDS-Congress who jumped the ship and joined the BJP last year, only K Sudhakar had risen to new heights by bagging two powerful portfolios.

He now holds both the medical education department and Health and Family Welfare departments.
