Govt fact-checks Rahul: 'India's GDP will grow 2 times more than Bangladesh'

The Modi government hits back at Rahul Gandhi with its own statistics on GDP  

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wenesday morning lashed out at the Government citing statistics, claiming that Bangladesh was set to overtake India in terms of per capita gross domestic product.

Rahul claimed that the data was shared by the International Monetray Fund in its World Economic Outlook.

The government has responded to Rahul with its own statistics.

Government sources said that in 2019, India's GDP in purchasing parity terms was 11 times more than that of Bangladesh while the population was 8 times higher.

Sources said that in purchasing power parity terms, India's per capita GDP in 2020 is estimated by IMF at $6284 as compared to $5139 for Bangladesh.

Purchasing power parity is a measurement of prices in different countries that uses the prices of specific goods to compare the absolute purchasing power of the countries' currencies

IMF has estimated India's GDP to grow at 8.8% in 2021, twice that of Bangladesh at 4.4%.

Government sources note that on the topic of Per Capita GDP, it is also important to note that under the Modi administration it has increased from Rs 83,091 in 2014-15 to Rs 1,08,620 in 2019-20 which is an increase of 30.7%. Under UPA 2, it had increased from Rs 65,394 in 2009-10 to Rs 78,348 in 2013-14, which is an increase of 19.8%.
