Coronavirus: 11 more Kolkata Police personnel test positive for COVID-19

A total of 217 cops have been tested positive for the coronavirus so far and on Saturday (June 6), a constable posted at the Shakespeare Sarani Police Station in Kolkata succumbed to the disease while undergoing treatment


Kolkata: As many as 11 Kolkata Police personnel have tested positive for COVID-19, taking the total number of infected policemen in the force to 217, a senior officer said on Tuesday (June 9).

The 11 infected Kolkata Police personnel were from the combat force, the Police Training School (PTS) and different police stations, the officer said.

"At the moment we have around 217 policemen who have been diagnosed with the disease. We have several of our colleagues who have recovered and resumed duty... I think our colleagues are doing a fabulous job. I wish everyone will be safe and all those down with the disease will get well soon," the IPS officer said.

Earlier, 17 police personnel of the Garfa Police Station in Kolkata had tested positive for COVID-19.

On Saturday, a constable posted at the Shakespeare Sarani Police Station in the city had succumbed to the disease while undergoing treatment at the Kolkata National Medical College.

Of the total 8,187 cases till June 7, Kolkata has reported 2,758 patients, while the rest have been almost evenly distributed across West Bengal. Of the 11 deaths reported on Sunday, Kolkata has reported the maximum deaths at seven.

Meanwhile, no new COVID-19 case in Maharashtra Police has been reported over the last 24 hours, confirmed state police. Total coronavirus cases in the force stand at 2,562, death toll at 34.

Maharashtra is inching closer to the 90,000-mark for COVID-19 cases as the state’s tally of infections touched 88,528 on Monday.

As lockdown curbs were eased under the state government’s “Mission Begin Again”, the authorities are expecting a surge in cases, especially in parts of Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Pune and Aurangabad.
