BJP: Congress gave ticket to Jinnah supporter

Synopsis

The BJP has alleged that Congress candidate Maskoor Usmani is a supporter of Mohammed Ali Jinnah.

A controversy has erupted in Bihar with questions being raised about the candidacy of Congress leader Maskoor Usmani from the Jale constituency in Darbhanga.

The BJP has alleged that Congress candidate is a supporter of Pakistan's founder Mohammed Ali Jinnah.

Firebrand BJP leader and Union Minister Giriraj Singh was     quoted as saying that Congress and Mahagathbandhan should answer whether they also support Jinnah and wondered whether Sharjeel Imam, who is currently in judicial custody, will be their star campaigner ahead of Bihar elections.

Interestingly, similar sentiments are being echoed from within the Congress party.

Congress leader Rishi Mishra, who quit JD-U to join the party, told news agency ANI: "It's a cruel joke. I left JD-U to contest from Jale. I would've been okay if someone else got ticket but they gave it to a Jinnah follower who has sedition case against him. He (Congress candidate Maskoor Usmani) puts Jinnah's photo in his office."

Usmani was reprtedly involved in protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the National Register of Citizens. He has been vocal against Hindutva politics and last year, the former AMU Students’ Union president was also charged with sedition for allegedly raising anti-national slogans.
