Remember and Never Forget: Captain Mandeep Singh, 4 Rashtriya Rifles

Captain Mandeep Singh hailed from Jalandhar in Punjab and joined Indian Army in 1991. Among friends, he was known as 'Harry'. He was commissioned into the Corps of Air Defence Artillery which was re-designated as the Corps of Army Air Defence with effect from April 18, 2005.


Just after the Kargil war with Pakistan ended on July 26, 1999, the Line of Control witnessed heavy enemy activity, and there were chances that the situation could get out of hand at short notice. The security forces were on alert mode. A substantial number of Indian Army personnel were deployed in Anantnag to provide security for Amarnath Yatra.

Kupwara town was being secured by the Central Reserve Police Force personnel. On August 6, 1999, at around 1:15 am, a group of heavily-armed terrorists attacked the Army camp of 4 Rashtriya Rifles unit in village Chak Nutnusa.

Capt Mandeep Singh, who was the Company Commander of 4 Rashtriya Rifles unit, and his men swung into action. Captain Mandeep Singh hailed from Jalandhar in Punjab and joined Indian Army in 1991. Among friends, he was known as 'Harry'. He was commissioned into the Corps of Air Defence Artillery, which was re-designated as the Corps of Army Air Defence with effect from April 18, 2005.

Since it was a surprise attack, Captain Singh ignored the threat to his life and rose to the occasion and fiercely engaged the terrorists.

The two sides witnessed a heavy exchange of fire, in which Captain Singh received a splinter injury on the left infraclavicular region. Before succumbing to his injuries, he had already neutralized 26 terrorists all alone.

For his dedication, bravery and indomitable spirit, Captain Mandeep Singh was awarded Kirti Chakra.

Captain Mandeep Singh laid down his life for his motherland on August 6, 1999. Let us 'Remember and Never Forget' this braveheart's supreme sacrifice.
