Hot, crispy jalebis are a staple at Indian festivals. But it's a fun fact that while India considers it the national sweet, its origins are actually in Iran (Persia). Over centuries, India has made this dessert completely its own.

The History of Jalebi
First off, people call jalebi by many names like Jilapi, Zulbia, or Jalabiya in different countries. Reports say its history goes back to 10th-century Arabic and Persian texts. Its original name was 'Zalabiya' or 'Zulbia'. In Persia (modern-day Iran) and the Middle East, people served this sweet during Ramzan and other festivals. It reached the Indian subcontinent between the 12th and 15th centuries with traders, Mughals, and Persian travellers. After coming here, its taste and shape became totally Indian.

India's Unofficial National Sweet
Today, jalebi is India's 'unofficial national sweet' without any official tag. People distribute it on Republic Day, Independence Day, and at school events. In North India, they eat it with tea or milk-curd. In Madhya Pradesh, they pair it with poha. In Bengal, it's called 'Jilapi'. Just like samosa and biryani, Indians have made this foreign sweet a part of their culture. You can find it everywhere, from street stalls to five-star hotels.

In which countries is Jalebi famous?
Besides India, jalebi is also very popular in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal (where it's called Jeri), Afghanistan, Egypt, and Tunisia. However, its cultural importance is deepest in India. While some sources also call it a popular Pakistani sweet, the 'national sweet' title is mainly and unofficially linked with India.
