Diwali 2021: Lighting a 'diya' at home? Follow these 3 Vaastu pointers

Vaastu Shastra mentions special aspects related to how lamps need to be used during Deepawali, the festival of lights. 

Today is Diwali, the festival of lights. According to mythology, it is believed that when Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya after completing his exile, people lit up the whole city with lamps in joy. Since then the tradition of lighting lamps on Diwali has continued. There are many other traditions and beliefs associated with the 'diya' or lamps. Mantras for lighting a lamp have been mentioned in religious texts. In Vaastu Shastra too, special aspects related to the lighting of lamps has been said. Here's what you should know about the 'diya'.

'Diya' removes negativity

During Deepawali, it is believed that lighting a lamp with cow's ghee, mustard or sesame oil removes negative energy in the house, positive energy is transmitted, prosperity comes into the house and family members gain fame and stature. According to Vaastu rules, the 'Akhand Deepak should be placed in the 'aagrey kone' or igneous angle of the place of worship. Keeping the lamp in this direction brings wealth and victory over enemies.

The lamp must face north

On Diwali, the lamp lit for Lakshmi Pooja must be kept facing north. This ensures wealth and prosperity in the house. Regarding the lighting of a lamp, it is said that lighting an even number of lamps deactivates the flow of positive energy. Lighting an odd number of lamps creates positive energy in the environment. This is the reason why an odd number of lamps are always lit in religious functions.

The lamp should not have cracks

Before lighting an earthen lamp, keep in mind that the lamp is clean and does not have any cracks anywhere. A broken lamp is considered inauspicious and forbidden in any worship. By lighting a lamp in cow's ghee, the surrounding environment becomes germ-free and pure. From the lamp, we get the inspiration to rise up in life, to rise high and to dispel the darkness of ignorance. Regarding the flame of the lamp, it is believed that keeping the flame towards the north direction increases health and happiness. Keeping the flame towards the east direction increases lifespan.
