A major weather shift is happening across the state. According to the Alipore Regional Meteorological Centre, a cyclonic circulation over East Uttar Pradesh and a trough extending from Gangetic West Bengal to Manipur are pulling in a lot of moisture from the Bay of Bengal. This is creating two completely different weather patterns in North and South Bengal.

How will the weather be today?
The weather office has put out a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in North Bengal. In contrast, South Bengal will remain hot and humid. Some relief might come from thunderstorms and rain. However, temperatures in the southern districts are not expected to drop much, leading to a very sticky and uncomfortable feeling.

South Bengal weather forecast
The forecast for South Bengal shows that western districts like Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, and Paschim Bardhaman may see temperatures 2-4 degrees Celsius above normal. In the last 24 hours, Purulia recorded the state's highest temperature at 40.7 degrees Celsius.
Thunderstorms with gusty winds are expected in several districts. Nadia, Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Hooghly, and North 24 Parganas could see winds of 50-60 km/h. Meanwhile, Kolkata, Murshidabad, Birbhum, Bankura, and Howrah might experience winds of 40-50 km/h along with thunderstorms. The Alipore Met Department says light rain and gusty winds will continue in some districts over the next few days.

The Alipore Met Department has announced that for the next few days, districts like Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar will get light to moderate rain or thunderstorms. A warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall is in place for North Bengal.

Possibility of very heavy rainfall
There's a chance of very heavy rainfall between May 21 and 24. Some areas in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar could receive 7 to 20 centimetres of rain. The forecast also predicts heavy rain (7-11 cm) for Cooch Behar, North and South Dinajpur, and Kalimpong districts. Along with the rain, these North Bengal districts could also face gusty winds of 40 to 50 km/h.
