Chennai Weather LATEST Update: The RMC has issued a heavy rain alert for 13 districts of Tamil Nadu on June 18, with thunderstorms and strong winds likely in several regions. Chennai may also experience light to moderate rainfall

Heavy Rain Warning Issued for 13 Tamil Nadu Districts

According to the Meteorological Department, weather conditions are being influenced by two trough systems extending across parts of southern and central India. As a result, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in many parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal today.

Heavy rain, along with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph, is likely at isolated places in the following 13 districts:

  • Nilgiris
  • Coimbatore
  • Theni
  • Dindigul
  • Madurai
  • Erode
  • Namakkal
  • Karur
  • Tiruchirappalli
  • Pudukkottai
  • Sivaganga
  • Ariyalur
  • Perambalur

Residents in these districts have been advised to remain cautious during periods of intense rainfall and thunderstorms.

Rainy Weather to Continue Over the Next Three Days

The weather department has indicated that the rain activity will continue over the coming days.

June 19:

The same 13 districts are expected to receive moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. Other parts of Tamil Nadu, along with Puducherry and Karaikal, may witness light to moderate showers.

June 20 and June 21:

Scattered areas across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to experience light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph.

Despite the rain, maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to remain close to normal levels between June 18 and June 21.

Chennai Forecast and Fishermen Advisory

For Chennai, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy throughout the day. Light rain accompanied by thunderstorms may occur in isolated parts of the city.

The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 37–38°C, while the minimum temperature may remain between 28–29°C.

The Meteorological Department has also issued a warning for fishermen. From June 18 to June 21, strong winds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are expected over Tamil Nadu's coastal areas, the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Comorin Sea regions.

Similarly, parts of the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining sea areas are expected to witness rough weather conditions. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the affected regions during the warning period to ensure their safety.
