Hayden Panettiere’s death at 36 has brought renewed attention to the actress’s life away from the screen, particularly her relationship with her only child, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko. Panettiere died on August 16, 2026. Her cause of death has not been disclosed, and authorities are investigating the circumstances.
Kaya, now 11, was born to Panettiere and Ukrainian former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko in December 2014. The couple were engaged at the time and had been in an on-and-off relationship for several years. Despite their high-profile careers, both parents have generally kept Kaya’s private life away from the spotlight.
Kaya Evdokia Klitschko is Panettiere’s only child. She has largely grown up away from Hollywood publicity, something her mother deliberately wanted for her.
Hayden Panettiere revealed in an interview before her death that Hollywood producers forced her from a very young age to think about death and unimaginable tragedy in order to cry on camera. As she got older, those thoughts had to become unfathomably darker. pic.twitter.com/t9k6OASq4M

In her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, Panettiere explained that Kaya did not choose to be born into a famous family. She wanted her daughter to have the freedom to decide how much of her life she wanted to share publicly.
Panettiere also spoke warmly about Kaya’s personality and interests. She described her daughter as talented and mature for her age and said she enjoys activities including swimming, horse riding, golf, piano and chess. She has also spoken about Kaya’s interest in languages.
Panettiere’s decision to give full custody to Klitschko came during one of the most difficult periods of her life.
After Kaya’s birth, Panettiere experienced severe postpartum depression. She later spoke publicly about struggling with alcohol addiction and prescription medication. She entered treatment and acknowledged that she was not in a healthy enough place to provide the stability her young daughter needed.

In 2018, Panettiere agreed to Klitschko having full custody of Kaya. She later explained that the decision was not simply about walking away from motherhood. Instead, she believed Kaya would be safer and more settled with her father while she concentrated on recovery.

Panettiere repeatedly rejected the idea that she had simply abandoned her daughter.
Speaking to Jay Shetty in May 2026, she said the suggestion that she had willingly “given away” her child was deeply hurtful. She explained that she knew how unwell she was at the time and feared that a public custody battle could cause further harm to Kaya.
She also said she saw the stable environment Kaya had with her father and decided not to disrupt it. Panettiere told Fox News that she knew Kaya was safe, well cared for and surrounded by a strong support system.
Although Kaya lived primarily with Klitschko, Panettiere remained involved in her daughter’s life.
The actress spoke about travelling to see Kaya and maintaining regular contact through FaceTime. In her memoir, she described the separation as one of the most painful experiences she had faced as a mother, but also emphasised the strength of their relationship.
Panettiere also praised Klitschko as a father and made clear that her daughter’s wellbeing remained the priority.
Panettiere’s death leaves Kaya as her surviving daughter, while Klitschko remains her father and primary caregiver. Her family has asked for privacy following the actress’s death. No cause of death has been publicly confirmed, so speculation about it should be treated cautiously.
For Panettiere, however, her public account of motherhood had already become an important part of her final years. Her story showed that giving another parent custody can be an intensely painful decision rather than a simple act of abandonment. Her own words made clear that, despite the distance, Kaya remained one of the most important people in her life.
