Speaking on his YouTube video, he said that there are plenty of reasons for Kohli being unsuccessful as captain. He reckons that Kohli makes errors in team selections, as was the case during the ICC World Test Championship final this year against New Zealand. He also believed that Ajinkya Rahane helped the side win in Australia and not Kohli. He identified that the side lost the opening Test under the latter before he returned home for maternity leave.

Although he termed Kohli as a top player, he lamented that Kohli was never a captaincy material. While he possesses aggression, he lacks decision-making abilities, he considered. He also pointed out conflicts in Kohli's thinking abilities, especially regarding the opening slot. He noted that while Kohli had asserted during the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) that he would open, he backtracked as the tournament edged closer.

Also, speaking on the game against NZ, Kaneria said that bringing in Ishan Kishan and demoting experienced pro Rohit Sharma down to number three was a disaster. However, he explained that Kohli might have been thinking to spoil pacer Trent Boult's bowling plans, as the Kiwis would have thought Rohit and KL Rahul would open, while Kohli wanted to check if the Kiwis' plans flop or not.
