The prestigious Vijayawada Metro Project of the Andhra Pradesh government has a hit a roadblock in its initial stages. The Amaravathi Metro Rail Corporation is in the process of acquiring land around the surrounding areas of Vijayawada.

The people of the specific localities expressed their objections to the government as well as the Metro authority to give their land. When neither of the authorities took note of their objections, the people took the matter to the  High Court. They submitted to the court that the Government Order released in January 2015 for land acquisition is against the people’s right to food and social security.

The court agreed to their appeal and gave a stay order till the next hearing. The judgement by Justice Sankar Rao immediately ordered the authorities to stop acquisition of land.

This project has been undertaken by the AP government with the assistance of international companies. The government had decided to start the work of two corridors by this year end. But with the stay order of High Court, there is now a dilemma as to when the project will finally start.
