The Taliban, which gained power in Afghanistan on August 15, have issued a warning stating the US will face "serious consequences" in the event of any delay or extension in the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.

A report on DailyMail quoted Taliban spokesman Dr Suhail Shaheen saying, the group will not accept an extension to the deadline and warned of retaliation if Western forces extend their 'occupation' since the group dramatically swept to power.

He told Sky News: “It's a red line. President Biden announced that on 31 August they would withdraw all their military forces. So, if they extend it that means they are extending occupation while there is no need for that.”

“If the US or UK were to seek additional time to continue evacuations - the answer is no. Or there would be consequences. It will create mistrust between us. If they are intent on continuing the occupation it will provoke a reaction.”

The development comes after, US President Biden had said that the United States had evacuated an “extraordinary number of people” from Kabul, but that his August 31 deadline for removing all American troops from Afghanistan might be extended while talking about the evacuation efforts in Afghanistan.

He also said that all evacuated Afghan allies will be given a home in the United States after they are screened and vetted at bases in other countries.

“We will welcome these Afghans who have helped us in the war effort over the last 20 years to their new home in the United States of America,” Biden said on Sunday afternoon in remarks from the Roosevelt Room at the White House. “Because that’s who we are. That’s what America is.”
