Starting from today, we’ll be curating a weekly list of the best new music. Whether it’s international or home brewed, we handpick the best of the best to create the perfect playlist just for you.

First up, throwback to two old tunes that are especially relevant this week.

Sir Mix A Lot: Baby Got Back

Pretty much everyone has heard this iconic track, whether it be the original or the sample in Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda. It’s certainly not a new track. In fact, it turned 25 years old this summer! Yep, we are all old now. Even though it’s been 25 years, some of the rhymes on this song are just timeless. While it is easy to call the song sexist, this track was one of the first to actually call out the media, which at the time saw little representation of full figured women in media.

The Allman Brothers Band: Midnight Rider

Last week, we bid adieu to Greg Allman from the Allman Brothers Band, one of the pioneers of Southern Rock. Allman was the lead singer and keyboard player of the band, providing anchorage in the band’s rhythm section. Midnight Rider is just another one of those Allman gems that we love so much. Thank you for the music!

Now, onto the freshest tracks that are a must-have for your playlist for the week!

Steven Wilson: Pariah ft. Ninet Tayeb

The reigning king of prog is set to return with a new album in August titled To the Bone. The first single, Pariah sets the tone for what’s to be expected. While it’s got that trademark Wilson melancholia attached to it, the song is still distinct from earlier works with a relatively more lush, electronic arrangement. Plus, with a voice like that of Ninet Tayeb, it’s really hard to go wrong.

Rainburn: Merchant of Dreams

While most just sleep, Bengaluru-based prog-rock band, Rainburn dreams on! With their latest single, Merchant of Dreams, Rainburn touches on the idea of selling dreams. The music has a tinge of Dream Theatre and mellower segments in the song are reminiscent of  Porcupine Tree, but the music is very much their own. The future of prog in India is in safe hands.

An Honest Mistake: The Snake With Limbs (Remix by FuzzCulture)

Music knows no boundaries. So when Malaysian band, An Honest Mistake collaborates with Indian electronic duo, FuzzCulture, you know you’re going to hear something great. While An Honest Mistake is known more for their affinity for Pop-Punk, the FuzzCulture remix allows you to experience the song from a completely different perspective. More collaborations? Yes, please.

Future: Mask Off (Remix) Feat. Kendrick Lamar

Probably one of the hottest remixes from the last week, two of Hip-Hop’s most acclaimed artists were heard together for the first time. While there’s been a lot of debate in recent times about who the better rapper is, this track proved that ultimately, it doesn’t matter. While Future’s easy, smooth flow eases you into the track, Lamar ups the ante with his multi-syllabic rhymes. Again, more collaborations please.

Lana Del Rey: Lust For Life

From Born to Die to Lust For Life, Lana Del Rey seems to have to come a long way. While she holds onto her romanticised sadness and Hollywood references, Lana Del Rey lets go of the dramatic string arrangements for a more refined and matured composition. The track really lets the collaboration between her and The Weeknd to shine through as well.

WEDNESDAY CAMPANELLA: Melos

Say hello to Wednesday Campanella AKA Suiyōbi no Campanella, a Japanese electronic music group. With their latest song, ‘Melos’, Wednesday Campanella prove to be able to make you dance to throbbing electronic pulses and have you groove to some really jazzy breakbeats in the same song.
