Skin care: DIY homemade scrubs that can exfoliate your skin
Here are some of the most popular types of DIY body scrubs that are both beneficial to your skin and easy to make.
Exfoliation can be a great way to keep your skin looking vibrant and healthy. It can leave your skin looking brighter because it removes the top layer of dead skin cells. It can also stimulate the production of collagen, which may help your skin stay firm and radiant.
With time, skin develops a layer of dead skin with accumulated dirt and oil, which in turn clogs the pores. It also serves as a breeding ground for bacteria that leads to skin problems like blackheads and acne. Scrubbing peels off the outermost layer of the skin unveiling a fresh, glowing skin sans debris.
A body scrub is a popular way to exfoliate your skin, and there are plenty of store-bought varieties to choose from. Or, you can make your very own homemade body scrub using ingredients you already have in your pantry.
Here are some of the most popular types of DIY body scrubs that are both beneficial to your skin and easy to make.
Coffee scrub: There’s some scientific evidence that caffeine may help diminish the appearance of cellulite. The tiny granules are gentle on the skin, while still being effective at removing dead cells from the skin’s surface. And who can’t resist the aroma of a cup of coffee?
Ingredients: 1/2 cup coffee grounds, 2 tbsp. hot water, 1 tbsp. coconut oil, warmed.
Method: Add the coffee grounds and hot water to a mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly with a spoon. Add the coconut oil. If needed, add more coffee grounds or more oil to get the consistency right. When you’re satisfied with the consistency, spoon the mixture into a container.
Brown sugar scrub: Brown sugar is an excellent natural exfoliant that works for all skin types.1 It's also a very popular ingredient for homemade scrubs because it contains more moisture. A brown sugar face scrub recipe can be elaborate or quite simple. Fill a bowl with one cup of brown sugar and add 3/4 cup of coconut oil and 3/4 cup of Manuka honey. For a boost in smell, add 2 drops of your favourite essential oil. Keep it for no more than 10 minutes and rinse after.
Oatmeal scrub: An oatmeal scrub works for most skin types—especially the dry, sensitive ones, as Goldenberg says. There are many ways to make one out of ingredients in your kitchen. This recipe gets extra moisturizing power from oatmeal with just sweet almond oil, milk, and egg. First, you have to soak your ground oatmeal overnight, in the same proportion of water (if you don't have the time, it can also be cooked). Place in a bowl one cup of this oatmeal, one teaspoon of sweet almond oil, two tablespoons of regular milk, and the whites of one egg. Apply to the face and neck in a circular motion.
Turmeric and sugar scrub: Turmeric is another magic ingredient for the skin, which is loaded with skin benefits. It helps in reducing tan, fighting off acne, lightening dark circles and even clear off dead skin. Just take a tablespoon of turmeric powder and add a teaspoon of sugar to it. Add a teaspoon of honey and mix it well. Apply it all over your face and leave it for 20 minutes. Wash using lukewarm water in order to remove the yellowness from the face.
Honey and sugar scrub: Applying honey on the face helps in opening up the skin pores, which further helps in getting rid of blackheads. Honey is a natural antioxidant and helps keep acne at bay, due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Just take a tablespoon of honey and add a teaspoon of sugar in it. Mix it well and apply it on your face. Let it dry for 20-30 minutes and wash it off with water.
