Washington DC crash: All feared dead in American Airlines jet and Army chopper collision, 28 bodies recovered

A mid-air collision between American Eagle Flight 5342 and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Washington, D.C., has left over 30 dead. Rescue teams battle harsh conditions as investigations begin. Victims include figure skaters and coaches, raising aviation safety concerns nationwide.

Washington, D.C., January 30 – A devastating mid-air collision between an American Airlines passenger jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter has resulted in a major rescue and recovery operation in the Potomac River. Authorities fear there are no survivors as emergency teams continue to retrieve bodies from the wreckage. So far, 28 bodies have been recovered, according to officials.   

The crash occurred at approximately 9 p.m. on Wednesday when American Eagle Flight 5342, carrying 64 people, collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The passenger jet, which had departed from Wichita, Kansas, was carrying passengers, including athletes and coaches, while the military helicopter had three personnel on board.

Both aircraft plunged into the icy waters of the Potomac River, triggering an immediate emergency response. However, rescue teams are now in recovery mode, with no signs of survivors.  

Fire officials have confirmed that 27 bodies have been recovered from the passenger jet, while one body has been pulled from the wreckage of the military helicopter. The search continues as authorities work in freezing conditions, but hopes for survivors have faded.  

Among the victims were American figure skaters, coaches, and trainers who were returning from a training camp. Russian media has also reported that two former world champion skaters were on board, adding to the global shock and mourning within the sports community.

Former President Donald Trump expressed his condolences, stating, “May God rest their souls.” He also commented on Truth Social, calling it “a terrible situation that should never have happened.”

Aviation and military experts are reviewing air traffic control data, flight paths, and possible communication failures to determine the cause of the disaster.
