US airstrike on ISIS-K 'planner' in Afghanistan's Nangarhar

In a statement, the US Central Command said that US forces carried out an over-the-horizon counter-terror operation in the Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

American forces carried out an airstrike in Afghanistan days after twin terror attacks claimed the lives of 13 US Marines outside Kabul's Hamid Karzai International airport.

The target of the unmanned airstrike was an ISIS-Khorasan planner. However, the identity of the terrorist was not revealed.

Islamic State Khorasan or ISIS-K, an Islamic State affiliate known to operate from Afghanistan and Pakistan, had claimed responsibility for the August 26 terror attack.

US CENTCOM said that as per initial assessment, the target was eliminated and there were no civilian casualties.

The airstrike comes just days after US President vowed to hunt down terrorists responsible for the Kabul terror attack which claimed over 169 lives, mostly people wanting to leave the country after the Taliban takeover.

Biden had vowed to hunt the terrorists down and avenge the deaths of US marines.

According to US officials, the suicide bomber was carrying about 25 pounds of explosives packed with shrapnel. The bomber detonated himself amidst the people waiting to get into the Kabul airport through the Abbey gate.

Besides Afghans, three British nationals, including a child, were among those killed.
