A Pakistan government helicopter crashed on Monday morning in the mountainous Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan, killing all five people on board, police said. The incident comes amid a series of deadly helicopter crashes in the country over recent years.

According to Abdul Hameed, a senior police officer in Diamer district, the helicopter “was carrying out a test landing on a newly proposed helipad” when it came down.

“Among the killed were two pilots and three technicians,” Hameed told AFP.

The helicopter belonged to the Gilgit-Baltistan government and crashed around 10:00 am local time (0500 GMT). Authorities rushed to the site, but all five people on board were confirmed dead.

This tragedy comes weeks after another government MI-17 helicopter crashed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while carrying out flood relief efforts, killing all five crew and pilots on board.

Pakistan has witnessed multiple deadly helicopter accidents in recent years. In 2022, five servicemen and one of the army’s top commanders died when a helicopter crashed during flood relief operations in southwestern Balochistan province.
