Kremlin confirms Putin-Trump call on Tuesday, focus on Ukrain-Russia conflict and US ties

Synopsis

Putin and Trump to discuss US-Russia relations and Ukraine conflict in scheduled phone call today.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump are set to hold a phone call today, scheduled between 13:00-15:00 GMT, as confirmed by the Kremlin. According to Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Kremlin, the two leaders have established a "certain understanding," but there are still numerous issues that require discussion.

The phone call is expected to focus on two primary topics: US-Russia Relations and the Ukraine Conflict.

Several matters remain to be discussed, including the division of assets such as territory and power plants. Russia currently controls most of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Luhansk, and the US has recommended that Ukraine give up these regions to end the war. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has shown no willingness to make land concessions.

Russia less likely to give up land

The situation is complex, with Russia maintaining its position that it will not give up the lands it has taken over. In fact, Putin has made concessions a condition of the ceasefire. This has raised concerns among NATO members in Europe, who fear that Trump may be too willing to concede to Russian demands before negotiations even begin.

Despite these concerns, Putin has expressed optimism about the relationship between the US and Russia, stating that it has begun to recover from the damage inflicted during Biden's administration. As Putin said, "Let's see what comes out of this." The phone call today may provide some answers, but it's clear that the road to resolving the Ukraine conflict will be long and challenging.
