SC grants relief to Mamata Banerjee’s poll agent

The Supreme Court on Friday (March 26) granted relief to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s Nandigram election agent SK Supian.
 


The Supreme Court on Friday (March 26) granted relief to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s Nandigram election agent SK Supian. The apex court also stayed the reopening of cases against him.

The FIR against Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee's election agent SK Supian was heard on an urgent basis in Nandigram. The Chief Justice approved the hearing of the case.

After hearing the lawyer's statement, a division bench of Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Krishna Murari said the Calcutta High Court could continue the hearing considering the importance of the matter.

However, a stay order is being issued on the order issued by the High Court on March 5 to reopen the criminal cases. For the time being, no disciplinary action can be taken against SK Supian.

SK Supian was named in FIRs relating to the Nandigram violence in 2007-09. Even as the FIRs were withdrawn by the West Bengal government in 2020, they have been revived after a recent order in this regard by Calcutta High Court.

Note that the apex court is scheduled to be closed till April 4 for the Holi holiday. In the meantime, Sk Supian will be allowed to work as an election agent.
