Officials and Bengalureans have manage to give the city's water bodies less grief and a chance to breathe easy. Every year, out of 4 lakh Ganesha idols, over 50,000 idols made of the banned plaster of paris would enter lakes and immersion venues. With combined efforts from Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and citizen groups, the ratio of POP idols in the city has dropped to only 1%.

According to Sarfaraz Khan, joint commissioner Solid Waste Management, BBMP, the city in the last year witnessed 60% earthen idols and 40% POP idols. This time with efforts and raids at different places to stop the manufacture and supply of POP idols, only 5,400 POP idols reached Bengaluru's water bodies and immersion venues.

The BBMP managed to create awareness among the public and as a result, 3.54 lakh earthen Ganesha idols reached BBMP lakes.  Officials thanked the public for their cooperation in curbing lake pollution.
