As courts seem to be more involved in checking on high-rise buildings and structures that violate the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act in terms of built-up area, additional floors etc, the BBMP now aims to tackle them with the heavy penalties and doubling of taxes.

Earlier, there was a proposal to demolish such buildings. After the Kerala government demolished four high-rise buildings near the coastal belt in Kochi, there was mounting pressure on the BBMP to take a similar stance. However, the residents in such illegal structures can breathe a sigh of relief as BBMP commissioner BH Anil Kumar has hinted at letting violators off after they pay a hefty penalty.

The BBMP commissioner said that the BBMP may levy heavy penalties and impose high taxes on such buildings that have violated BBMP rules.
