Bengaluru: The BBMP which had earlier cracked down on restaurants and hotels for flouting smoking rules will restart its drive with what it calls as an effective mechanism.

Due to the staff crunch, the BBMP will deploy a marshal in each of the 198 wards and has directed them to work with the senior health inspector track down restaurants and hotels which see a defiance of the ban on smoking in public.

According to Sarfaraz Khan, joint commissioner, Health, the BBMP has cracked down on a few hotels and restaurants on MG Road and surrounding areas.  Now by deploying marshals, the drive will be intensified and all such places defying the law will have penalties imposed against them, and they will be at risk of losing their trade licence.
