PM Modi to interact with CMs on April 8, to discuss current COVID-19 situation, vaccination strategy

Synopsis

Modi’s last interaction with chief ministers was on March 17 during which he had expressed concern over the rise in Covid-19 cases in parts of the country and called for “quick and decisive” steps to check the “emerging second peak”.  

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a meeting on April 8 with chief ministers of all the states and Union Territories to discuss the current status of the Covid-19 pandemic in the nation along with issues related to vaccination via video conferencing, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said on Monday.

Modi’s last interaction with chief ministers was on March 17 during which he had expressed concern over the rise in Covid-19 cases in parts of the country and called for “quick and decisive” steps to check the “emerging second peak”.

Eight states including Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab have shown a steep rise in daily Covid-19 cases, accounting for 81.90% of the 1,03,558 new infections reported in a span of 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry has said.

Ahead of the PM’s interaction with chief ministers, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan will on Tuesday hold a meeting with health ministers of 11 states and Union Territories, which have been witnessing a surge in coronavirus cases, to review the situation there.

These 11 states are Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan.

At the last meeting on Sunday, the Prime Minister decided to send officials to Maharashtra, Punjab and Chhattisgarh - three states which continue to report a surge in the number of daily cases - to address the issues related to the recent spike in infections. PM Modi also instructed officials present in the meeting to ensure strict implementation of the five-fold strategy of - testing, tracing, treatment, and following Covid-appropriate behaviour and vaccination.
