Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai has announced weekend lockdown in bordering districts as both Kerala and Maharashtra have witnessed a spike in new infections and death cases due to Covid.The CM also said that the entire state will go into night curfew from 9 pm to 5 am. The rule will come into effect from tonight.
As neighbouring states Kerala and Maharashtra witnessed a spike in Covid cases, Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai has ordered for weekend lockdown in eight bordering districts and night curfew.
While weekend lockdown will come into effect in districts bordering Maharashtra and Kerala from tonight 9 pm to 5 am on Monday, the entire state will have to follow night curfew from 9 am to 5 am.
Karnataka-Kerala bordering districts like Chamarajanagar, Mysuru, Dakshina Kannada, and Kodagu in south and Bidar, Belagavi, Vijayapura and Kalburgi districts in Maharashtra-Karnataka border will go into weekend lockdown from tonight itself.
While medical, essential services, fruits and vegetable shops will be allowed to open, other activities are banned during the weekend lockdown in these eight districts. Similarly, the night curfew that was between 10 pm to 5 am has been revised to 9 pm to 5 am and it has to be followed in the entire state and from tonight itself.
There is relaxation in movement for industrial workers, those who work in IT and other essential services provided they show their ID card when asked by officials.
The decision was taken following the state reporting 1,785 new infections and 25 deaths.
In Kerala, 22,040 new cases and 117 deaths were reported on Thursday and Maharashtra reported 6,695 cases and 120 deaths.
It is said, anticipating a spike in Karnataka, these decisions were taken as the state was already witnessing an increase in cases in the Karnataka-Kerala border. Dakshina Kannada reported 337 cases, Mysuru reported 105 cases, Kodagu reported 100 cases and Chamarajanagar witnessed 44 cases on Thursday.
