H-1B visa: US to conduct rare second lottery to help Indian IT professionals

Several tech companies in the US depend on the H-1B visa to hire thousands of workers from nations like India and China each year.

In good news for IT professionals, the United States has announced that it will conduct a rare second lottery for the H-1B visa to provide a chance to the hundreds of Indian IT professionals who were not successful in the first random selection.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) took the decision after determining that the computerised draw of lots for H-1B visas held earlier this year did not give them enough number of Congressional mandated H-1B visas.

USCIS stated that an H-1B cap-subject petition must be filed at the correct service center. However, an online filing option is not available for H-1B petitions.

The USCIS in a statement said that we recently determined that we needed to select additional registrations to reach the Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 numerical allocations. On July 28, we selected previously submitted electronic registrations using a random selection process.

The petition filing period based on registrations selected on July 28 will begin on August 2 and end on November 3. Individuals with selected registrations will have their myUSCIS accounts updated to include a selection notice, which includes details of when and where to file, the USCIS explained, providing details of the random selection process.

The H-1B is the most sought-after visa among Indian IT professionals, which is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign personnel in specialty occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise.

Several technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China.
