China's 'Covid sympathy' sham exposed with one Weibo post

Days after Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi sympathising with the Covid-19 situation in India, a Chinese Communist Party social media post has created a massive furore.
Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China posted two photos on Weibo, which showed a rocket and mass cremation of bodies in India with the caption -- "Lighting a Fire in China Vs Lighting a Fire in India".
The social media account with more than 15 million followers was shared 9,000 times before it was withdrawn.
However, the post received backlash in the comment section and some even suggested showing sympathy during these devastating times.
Many users termed it as "inappropriate".
"I don't know what is wrong with the online editor of China Chang'an today. From the propaganda point of view, this is a classic case of propaganda failure," one of the comments read.
"This is so inappropriate for an official account," another comment read.
Chinese government's mouthpiece Global Times Editor-in-Chief Hu Xijin asked to show sympathy for New Delhi.
"Hold high the banner of humanitarianism at this time, show sympathy for India, and firmly place Chinese society on a moral high ground," he said.
India had on Sunday reported a marginal dip in the Coronavirus cases but deaths from the virus jumped by a record 3,689.
As per the reports, a total of 392,488 new cases reported in the previous 24 hours, taking the total cases to 19.56 million.
