6.7 magnitude earthquake jolts Assam; tremors felt up to North Bengal

A massive 6.7 magnitude earthquake rocked Assam at 7:51 am on Wednesday. The epicentre of the earthquake was Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district.

Minor aftershocks were experienced following the major quake that seismologists report struck at a depth of 17 km near Sonitpur.

No loss of lives has been reported, even though the quake did pull down some walls. Cracks in structures have been reported in some areas.

"Just experienced a massive earthquake in Assam. Waiting for details," he said.

Prime Minster Narendra Modi called up Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and assured all possible help from the Centre.

 

Spoke to Assam CM Shri Ji regarding the earthquake in parts of the state. Assured all possible help from the Centre. I pray for the well-being of the people of Assam.
