Taking note of media reports which cited Delhi government orders providing 100 rooms in The Ashoka Hotel as Covid facility for High Court judges and their families, a bench of Justices Vipin Sanghi and Rekha Palli wondered if the order was given for the court's benefit or whether to appease the court.
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday denied asking the Arvind Kejriwal government for five-star Covid care facilities for its judges and staff.
The court called the order issued by Sub Divisional Magistrate Geeta Grover on April 25 misleading.
"It is unthinkable that we as an institution would take preference when people are dying on the road. Can we, as an institution, tell you to create a facility for us? Would it not be patently discriminatory," the bench asked.
The bench pulled up the Delhi government for allocating the rooms in the five-star hotel.
"You are passing orders left, right and centre without meaning to do anything about it. We have not even asked for it," the court said, adding, "You don't have oxygen, and you are talking about having 100 beds facility for us. It is unfortunate."
The court said it could not fault the media for pointing this out, considering the order itself was wrong.
