India's largest telecom operator Bharti Airtel on Tuesday, September 28, said it has deployed a 5G capable technology, which will offer faster data speeds to consumers and improve network capacity.
And Bengaluru will become the first Indian city to use this next-generation mobile technology.
The operator will deploy 'Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology', a key driver for futuristic 5G networks in Bengaluru and Kolkata in the first phase.
Customers will enjoy faster data speeds on their existing 4G mobile devices without having to upgrade or change their tariff plans, the company said in a statement.
"India joins a select group of countries globally to deploy Massive MIMO, marking a major technological leap for the telecom sector in the country," the Airtel release said.
Although 5G is capable of much higher speeds of 500 Mbps going up to 1 Gbps, Airtel is expected to offer speeds only two to three times faster than 4G to begin with.
Deccan Herald reports that India will become the first country globally to use Massive MIMO Technology for 5G data although China and Japan already use this technology but on 4G network.
The move comes at a time when the government has formed a high-level forum to guide India to start 5G service by 2020, a technology that will deliver wireless broadband speed of about 10,000 mbps in urban areas and 1,000 mbps in rural belts.
In a bid to facilitate research and development activities for 5G service rollout, the government is also looking at setting up a Rs 500-crore support fund.
