Public Welfare Department has begun the task of producing a new software to sell sand online. Tamil Nadu government has been engaged in the direct sale of sand since May, 2017.
Public Welfare department is assigned to monitor the sale. In order to avoid sand scarcity, it has planned to open quarries in 75 places.
So far quarries have been opened in 29 places. These quarries could afford only 5000 loads of sand which would definitely lead to sand scarcity in the future. This is the reason why sand price is not under control.
An official from Public Welfare Department has said that there has been a heavy loss due to the closure of many TASMAC outlets .In order to compensate for the loss, the government is focusing on generating revenue through sale of sand. Hence it has planned to sell sand online.
A software is being exclusively created through ‘ELCOT’. As of now TN is getting up to Rs 100 crore a year by selling sand. This new venture is expected earn more revenue for the government.
