Synopsis

15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, despite his IPL success, is struggling to convert aggressive starts into substantial scores in the ODI Tri-Nation series. A recurring weakness against short-pitched bowling and his inability to build long innings are emerging as key concerns during his transition to the 50-over format.

The 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has yet again failed to convert his start into substantial scores in India A’s crucial ODI Tri-Nation series match against Afghanistan at Rangiri International Cricket Stadium in Dambulla on Wednesday, June 17.

After being put to bat first by the Afghanistan A skipper Imran Mir, India A openers, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Priyansh Arya, set a brisk pace for the visitors. Resorting to aggressive batting, the opening duo launched a counter-offensive against the Afghan seamers, bringing up a 50-plus opening stand in quick time.

As Sooryavanshi and Arya were building momentum, the former’s stay at the crease was marked by a series of high-tension moments, including two controversial lifelines, before Faridoon Dawoodzai eventually removed him. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s cameo knock of 38 off 28 balls was assisted by 4 fours and 2 sixes, alongside two reprieves.

Sooryavanshi’s Struggle to Convert Starts Continues

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s selection to the India A squad for the ongoing ODI Tri-Nation series was viewed as a natural progression for the young prodigy following his record-breaking IPL 2026, wherein he amassed a staggering 776 runs, including a century and 5 fifties, at an average of 237.30 in 16 matches, making him the youngest Orange Cap winner.

The expectations were high for the 15-year-old to carry his explosive IPL form into the 50-over format. However, the transition has proven to be a stern test of his technical repertoire. Sooryavanshi’s talent is undoubtedly immense, and his ability to clear the ropes with ease has made him the most exciting prospect in Indian cricket.

Apparently, the transition from T20 cricket to 50-over format requires a fundamental shift in mindset, one that Sooryavanshi is still grappling with. In the first three outings of the ODI tri-series, the young batter registered the scores of 14 (12), 44 (22), and 21 (14), showcasing the attacking instincts that have become synonymous with his batting style.

In a crucial match against Afghanistan, Sooryavanshi continued to showcase his aggressive intent at the top of the order, scoring 38 off 28 balls at a strike rate of 135.71. Across the series so far, the 15-year-old has been batting at a strike rate of over 110, which highlights his intent to dominate from the outset.

However, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s quickfire starts to his innings have often gone unrewarded, with the youngster unable to carry on after getting set. His inability to stay longer at the crease rather than just playing aggressive cameos has meant that promising starts have repeatedly been cut short before they could be converted into match-defining knocks.

Sooryavanshi’s Short-Ball Woes Raise Concerns

Apart from his tendency to throw away promising starts, Sooryavanshi’s struggles against short-pitched deliveries have also emerged as a key area of concern in the ongoing series. In the recent outing against Afghanistan A, the 15-year-old succumbed to a short-pitched delivery from Faridoon Dawoodzai. In an attempt to play a pull shot, he mistimed the ball and was caught by Khalid Taniwal.

Sooryavanshi’s struggle against short-ball delivery has sparked debate on social media, especially X (formerly Twitter), where fans and cricket enthusiasts have been divided in their assessment of his early career trajectory. While some have pointed to his age and immense potential, others have raised concerns about his technical handling of rising deliveries and shot selection under pressure.

Others, however, have urged patience, noting that such technical struggles are common at this stage of development and that exposure at the India A level is meant to help young players identify and improve weaknesses before stepping further.

Across four matches in the tri-series, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has aggregated 117 runs at an average of 29.25 and a strike rate of 153.95. Though the strike rate highlights his aggressive intent and ability to score quickly at the top of the order, the relatively modest average reflects his ongoing struggle to convert starts into substantial innings.
