The people of Mandya, referring to TN Chief Minister Jayalalithaa as the 'daughter of Karnataka', have sent her a 'bagina' with a letter - requesting her to understand the conditions in Mandya and not ask for Cauvery water this year.
A 'bagina' is a traditional annual gift given to daughters by their parent's family, usually on specific festivals. It is a package that includes sarees, bangles, a small box of sindoor, a pack of bindis, a comb, etc.
Their letter states:
“Amma, you are Karnataka’s daughter. Please try to understand the pain of the people here. Do not ask for Cauvery water. With respect were have sent the ‘bagina’ with sindoor through post."
The step was taken by the Hithachinata forum of Mandya. They have posted the 'bagina' with the letter to Jayalalithaa’s home address in Chennai.
The letter also requests Jayalalithaa not to come in the way of the Mekedaatu project of Karnataka.
“The farmers on the banks of Cauvery River are suffering due to scanty rains. Please do not destroy our living and families. Let us happily celebrate the Gowri festival,” the letter stated further.
The people of Mandya are concerned as the weather department has predicted deficit rains this year.
