Government schools are declining everyday

Synopsis

Around 300 Kannada schools have officially taken approval to instruct in English medium in Bengaluru. Supreme Court said that the government should facilitate the parents and the children to choose a medium of their choice.

Private and aided schools of Bengaluru take permission for Kannada medium, but they gradually turn into English medium schools.

In the last two years around 300 Kannada private schools have officially taken approval from the Department of Public Instructions to instruct in English medium in Bengaluru alone.

Between the year 2015 and 2017 the education department has given approval to 149 Kannada Medium Schools to transfer itself to English medium. Currently there are just 150 Kannada schools in Bengaluru.

“Many schools are submitting application to run English Medium schools since the language policy is cancelled in the state. There are three thousand schools in the city out of which medium of instruction is Kannada only in 5% of schools” Ashwath Narayan Gowda, DDPI (Deputy Director of Public Instructions).

Sources from the education department say that it has got more than 500 applications to start new schools out of which not a single application has appealed for Kannada Medium school. Already 2500 Kannada medium schools are closed in the last five years.

In 1994-95 state government mandated the medium of instruction to be in Kannada in all schools from 1st to 4th standard. Then private schools association filed a writ petition in the High Court and the High court gave a verdict against the language policy of the government.

Consequently the state government approached Supreme Court. Even the Supreme Court upheld the order of High Court and said that the language policy should facilitate the parents and the children to choose a medium of instruction of their choice.

This verdict of Supreme Court has turned fatal for Kannada Medium schools.
