
A new kaftan collection by Gucci is the latest source of Twitter chatter, all because many are calling the outfits costlier versions of Indian kurtas. The brand’s latest collection has traditional necklines and tassels which reminded many of the classic kurtas worn by Indian women.
Italian fashion house Gucci is being called out by netizens for selling a ‘floral embroidery organic linen kaftan’ which looks like a kurta, for a whopping $3500, which comes to more than Rs 2.5 lakhs.
The attire has been named "organic linen kaftan" which is beige in colour and has floral embroidery that has a neck opening with self-tie tassel and is mid-length like a typical kurta.
Twitter is flooded with comments from the Indian netizens who criticizing Gucci for selling a kurta for an exorbitant price. From Rs 50 to Rs 500, people have been sharing the range in which is a good quality kurta can be bought in the country.
Going by the reactions on Twitter, Indians are not happy - neither about the cultural appropriation and nor about the price tag, which some have claimed is too high even for a world-famous luxury fashion house, when similar outfits can be bought for a fraction of the price.
