Strict action promised against those who mix chemical in fish

The health department has decided to tighten food security tests after high concentration of chemicals were found in formalin fish. Health Secretary and Food Safety Commissioner will also attend the meeting. 


The government has decided to take strict action against those who bring about a wide range of fish mixed with the chemical into the state. A meeting of high-ranking officials will be held with the Health Minister to examine the Food Security Act.

At the same time, the guidelines for strict surveillance for fauna and other food products will also come into effect. 

Around 9,000 kilograms of fish was reportedly mixed with a chemical substance at Aryankavu check post in Kollam. Reports say that the food safety division started enquiry as part of Sagar Rani Operation. The fish were brought from Thoothukudi and Mandapam to Kochi and Ettumanoor.

7,000 kilograms of prawns and 2,000 kg of other fishes in three lorries from Thoothukudi, Rameswaram and Mandapam were said to be caught during an investigation.
