Mohanlal-starrer Drishyam is set to become the first Indian film to be remade into Chinese after the rights to its screenplay have been acquired by a production house Beijing.

The film's writer-director Jeethu Joseph and producer Antony Perumbavoor were in China earlier this week to finalise the deal. Jeethu announced the news through a video posted on his Facebook page.

Reports claim that Drishyam's remake rights have been sold for a whopping sum. Jeethu stated that it's the first time that a Chinese company has bought the screenplay rights of an Indian film.

Shot in just 44 days and released on 19 December 2013, Drishyam was the first Malayalam film to collect Rs 50 crore from the box office. The film was later dubbed to several languages including Chinese and grossed over Rs 75 crore worldwide and ran for more than 150 days in theatres.

The film, shot by Sujith Vaassudev and edited by Ayoob Khan, also features Meena, Asha Sarath, Siddique and Kalabhavan Shajon in important roles.

Drishyam won numerous accolades including the Kerala State Film Awards for Best Popular Film. The film has already been remade in several languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada and also in Sinhalese.
