Medical admission: Supreme Court allows private colleges to charge ₹11 lakh

The Supreme Court allowed self-financing medical colleges in Kerala to collect ₹11 lakh towards admission fee for medical education. The interim order was given in a plea filed by the college managements challenging Kerala High Court's order allowing state government to fix the fee as ₹5 lakh per year. 

Those colleges that have not signed an agreement with the state government on the fee structure can go ahead and charge ₹11 lakh. The petition was filed by two college managements in the state. 

Of the total amount, ₹5 lakh should be handed over as cash while the rest can be given as bank guarantee. However, the order will be in effect only till Kerala High Court pronounce final verdict. 

The High Court had passed an interim order allowing the government to go ahead with ₹5 lakh annual fee stipulated by J Rajeshdrababu Committee for 85% in self-financing colleges.

The court also said that the NRI fee would be ₹20 lakh. The state government was also ordered to refrain from entering into all kinds of agreement with self-financing colleges.
