A Kerala youth, whose genitals were cut off by a woman at a lodge in Malappuram last month, has undergone a successful reconstruction surgery at a hospital in Kozhikode. 

Purathur native Irshad's genitals were successfully re-fixed after a complex eight-hour long surgery at the Aster Malabar Institute of Medical Science (MIMS) and the patient was discharged on Wednesday.

Irshad, 26, was admitted to the hospital on September 21, after three-fourth of his genitals were cut off by a woman following heated arguments at a lodge in Kuttipuram. 

A team of surgeons led by Dr Krishnakumar, senior consultant and head of plastic and reconstruction surgery department, performed the surgery a week ago, read a release from the hospital.

"To re-implant an amputated penis, all the complex structures in the organ have to be repaired. In this case, we successfully repaired the arteries, veins, nerves, the urethora and the muscles attached to the organ," the release quoted Krishnakumar as saying.

The 30-year-old woman, who hails from Perumbavoor, was understood to be in love with Irshad. She allegedly carried out the attack in an apparent revenge after he attempted to marry another woman.

The woman was arrested on September 24. Reports claim she is a divorcee and had married Irshad secretly. The youth later tried to play down the incident, by saying he chopped the genitals himself.
