'Love jihad' case: SC restores Hadiya's marriage to Shafin Jahan

In its ruling in the Kerala 'love jihad' case, the SC asked the NIA to continue its probe without interfering in the marriage of Hadiya and Shafin Jahan. A three-judge bench gave the ruling after NIA lawyer Maninder Singh told the apex court that probe in the case was almost over. Meanwhile, Hadiya's father KM Asokan said he would consider moving a review petition in the Supreme Court against its judgement.

The Supreme Court on Thursday restored Hadiya's marriage to Shafin Jahan and also set aside the Kerala High Court order that had earlier annulled the validity of her marriage.

In its ruling in the Kerala 'love jihad' case, the SC asked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to continue its probe without interfering in the marriage of Hadiya and Jahan.

The apex court's order came on a day when the world was celebrating International Women's Day 2018. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra gave the ruling after NIA lawyer Maninder Singh told the apex court that probe in the case was almost over.

The court was hearing the final arguments in the appeal filed by Shafin against the Kerala HC judgment nullifying the 24-year-old homeopathic student's marriage with him.

Meanwhile, Hadiya's father KM Asokan said he would consider moving a review petition in the Supreme Court against its judgement setting aside a Kerala HC order annulling her marriage.

"Will consider filing a review petition," Asokan told reporters, reacting to the ruling by the apex court bench. He maintained that his daughter's marriage with Shafin was an act of "adjustment" done by a group.
