Another day, another death: Dowry kills one more Kerala girl

Synopsis

Liji was married to Bijeesh for over a year and has a four-month-old daughter Bijeesh used to torture her mentally and physically demanding dowry The woman committed suicide by jumping into the well on the house premises

Another case of dowry related death has been reported from Kerala. The woman ended her life by jumping into well, and police have arrested her husband. 

A similar case was reported yesterday where a 20-year-old hanged herself just three months after marriage.

Liji, a native of Umbernad in Mavelikkara, Alappuzha, committed suicide on August 11. Her husband Bijeesh found her body in the well on the premises of their house. She had gone for washing clothes, and Bijeesh started looking for her as she did not return after several hours. 

Police state that he used to beat her up demanding dowry. "He wanted Liji's mother to sell the house and seven cents of adjoining land and to give the money to him as dowry. He used to abuse Liji both mentally and physically," Chengannur DySP K R Shivasuthan Pillai said. 

He had also misbehaved with Liji's mother and sister, who visited her on Thursday. Unable to bear the torture she decided to end the torture. 

Liji got married to Bijeesh a year-and-a-half ago, and the couple has a 4-year-old daughter.
