Lawyer moves High Court seeking ban on BJP's 'janaraksha yatra'

Synopsis

A petition is filed in Kerala High Court to prevent BJP from conducting 'janaraksha yatra' in Kannur The petition states that the proposed 'yatra' of the BJP will worsen the political situation in the district BJP chief Amit Shah is scheduled to join the yatra beginning at Payyannur in Kannur

A practising lawyer has moved Kerala High Court seeking a directive preventing the BJP chief Amit Shah from conducting a yatra in Kannur. The petition has sought a High Court directive to Kannur district administration.

The petition states that the proposed 'janaraksha yatra' of the BJP will worsen the political situation in the district. Kannur has been facing political clashes between RSS and BJP workers for quite some time, and almost 20 persons have killed in the violence.

Shah is scheduled to join the yatra beginning at Payyannur.

Condemning political killings in Kerala and expressing concern over the deaths of its workers, the BJP had earlier this week said it would hold a protest 'padyatra' in the state.

Shah will flag off the fortnight-long 'padyatra' in Kannur district on October 3 in which several union ministers and senior BJP functionaries will participate.

The BJP has been accusing the Left Front government led by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan of escalating political violence in the state which it claimed was aimed at crushing the BJP and the RSS.

The BJP has just one member in the 140-seat Kerala Assembly. The BJP said that the recurring attacks on the BJP and RSS activists were a desperate attempt by the Left to finish off its political opponents, especially as the BJP influence was growing in the southern state that has been a traditional Left bastion.
